Section One, narrated by Darl. Darl returns with his brother Jewel from the fields. Darl is a full head shorter, which might be an age tip-off. They approach a cottonhouse. Jewel walks rigidly, walking through the cottonhouse windows while Darl circles the path.

Cataloguing all of her relationships with her brothers, Dewey Dell first imagines killing Darl with the knife Vardaman used to cut up the fish he caught. She then finds herself thinking about a bad dream she had when she used to sleep alongside Vardaman. In the dream, Dewey Dell could not see or feel anything, until she felt something "like a

Summary . Darl begins the novel with a short but telling section. He and Jewel are walking up to the house. On the walk, Darl mentions the heat, Jewel's "pale eyes like wood," Tull's wagon, and the box that Cash is making for Addie. Notes . Faulkner uses Darl's first section to situate him as a reliable, straightforward narrator.
Summary. The next sections of As I Lay Dying revolve around Addie's death. Darl has already narrated, but this is the first time Tull, Anse, Peabody, and Vardaman narrate.. Section 8: Tull Tull and Cora leave the Bundren house for the evening, taking their daughters Kate and Eula with them.

Dewey Dell preoccupies herself once again with thoughts of her potential pregnancy, referring to herself as a "little tub of guts." She thinks of how much Peabody could help her in an ideal and unrealistic world. She claims, "I would let him come in between me and Lafe, like Darl did." Dewey Dell is distracted by the sound of Cash 's saw, but complies with her father's request to make dinner.
